Hammer Price: £1,500
Description
Voyages.- [Hakluyt (Richard)] [The Principall Navigations, Voiages, Traffiques and Discoueries of the English Nation...], vol.1 & 2 only (of 3) in 1, second edition, second issue without the suppressed leaves 3E4-F4 on the conquest of Cadiz by the Earl of Essex at end of vol.1, mostly printed in black letter, vol.1 lacking title, woodcut historiated or decorative initials, first and last leaves a little soiled and frayed at edges, a few spots and stains, wormhole to fore-margin of vol.1 affecting a few side-notes but not legibility, hole to 2Q5 slightly affecting pagination and a couple of letters, a few marginal tears and defects, modern half calf, spine gilt, [Cordier BS 1939; Sabin 29596a & 25597; STC 12626], folio, [by George Bishop, Ralph Newberie and Robert Barker], [1599]-99.
⁂ The second, much expanded, edition of Hakluyt's celebrated collection of voyages, first published in 1589 in a single volume. It contains much information on Asia, from the medieval travellers John of Plano Carpini and William of Rubruck in the thirteenth century and Odoric of Pordenone in the fourteenth, until the early 1590s. Especially notable is the 'Excellent description of the kingdome of China', which Hakluyt printed for the first time in English, translated from a Latin book published at Macao in 1590 captured by the English in 1592. A third volume, devoted principally to America and occasionally including a world map was published in 1600. The account of the raid on Cadiz by the Earl of Essex was printed at the end of the first volume in the first issue of 1598, but, because of its political sensitivity, these leaves (pp. 607–19) were not included in the second issue.
