India & elsewhere.- Doran & Magrath families.- Extensive correspondence, journals and some related ephemera relating to the Doran family (of Ely House, Wexford) and Magrath family (the families became connected via the marriage of Georgina Sultana Magrath and General Sir John Doran KCB), includes: many letters from India, James Butler journal (with Magrath connection), bound in green vellum, 1829-35; autograph manuscript record of Doran’s military career; 3 military commissions signed by Queen Victoria; 52 page Crimean War journal with manuscript military map, numerous military letters from India (Peshwara etc.), folds, various condition, housed in a small 19th century wooden trunk, v.s., v.d., 1842-1921 (qty).

⁂ The Doran and Magrath families, both from Ireland, served across the British Empire, in India and China. General Sir John Doran KCB (1824-1903) saw extensive service in India and the North West Frontier. Doran's younger brother, Lieutenant Robert Doran (1827-52), 18th Royal Irish was killed at the storming of Schwedagon Pagoda, Rangoon, on 14th April, 1852, during the Second Anglo-Burmese War. General Doran’s sons also had military careers.
