J Redouté, first edition, mixed issues, half-title, title with stipple-engraved vignette, 65 stipple-engraved plates printed in colour and finished by hand, of which 7 are ?first issue without captions, lacking 10 preliminary pages and 2pp. table, occasional small water-stain to upper or lower margins, occasional light foxing or spotting and surface marks, some browning to margins, bookplates to front pastedown, contemporary ink ownership inscription of James Copland M.D. F.R.S to half-title, contemporary half-morocco boards, gilt spine, a little wormed at head of spine, bumped, joints splitting but holding firm, some staining to covers, chipping to upper cover, rubbed, edges uncut, [Nissen 1688], folio, approx. 545 x 340 mm, Paris, 1805.
⁂ Rousseau's knowledge as an amateur botanist, was initially used to educate the daughters of Rousseau's friend on botany. His insights were later posthumously revered and enhanced by the artistic skill and scientific precision of Redouté's illustrations. The notable work is considered a celebration of interdisciplinary collaboration which continues to influence botanical education and artistic representation.
