China.- Confucius. The Works..., translated by J.Marshman, Vol.1 [all published], first edition in English, half-title, 4pp. errata, Chinese and English text, without the 'Dissertation on the Chinese Language and Character' and its four tables, and the 17pp. postscript, some light spotting or browning and marginal water-staining, modern half calf, spine gilt with black roan label, spine slightly faded, [Diehl 48 (pp.114-115); Löwendahl 743; Lust 738], 4to, Serampore, printed at the Mission Press, 1809.

*** The first English translation of the Analects (Lunyu) of Confucius, containing the first five of twenty books, translated by the Baptist missionary Joshua Marshman (1768-1837) and printed at Serampore. No further books of the Analects were published at Serampore, the first major center of English printing in Chinese. The first complete English translation by James Legge was only published in 1861.

This copy is without the Dissertation on the Chinese Language and Character and its four tables, and the 17pp. postscript which were probably published separately and are sometimes missing.
