Lord Amherst & Lord Byron.- Amherst (William Pitt, first Earl Amherst of Arracan, diplomat and governor-general of Bengal, 1773-1857) Collection of 7 autograph letters signed A from Lord Amherst to his wife Lady Amherst & 1 letter to Lady Amherst initialled HUA, together c. 40pp. with some address panels, sm. 4to, Grosvenor Street, London, Oxford & elsewhere, 1807 - 4th August 1815 & Zurich, 6th July 1816, letters including: 8 page letter 1807 with news from Copenhagen; 4 page letter 1807 on taking Lady Amherst’s son from an earlier marriage to Oxford; 5 page letter June 20 forwards report of the battle of Waterloo, “great battle, with much slaughter on both sides, but the advantage on that of the Allies”; 5 page letter June 30 1815 with extensive discussion of Waterloo, “All that relates to Blucher also is interesting in the highest degree. His horse was killed and fell upon him and the enemy passed and repassed him in the night while he lay in that condition. It is quite romantic that he and the Duke should unexpectedly meet in the dark at the close of the battle of the 18th at a farm house called “La Belle Alliance. There seem to be three ways of naming the battle… .”; 6 page letter 4th August 1815, includes discussion of Blucher and Napoleon; & last letter to Lady Amherst mentioning Lord Byron in Switzerland, "Lord Byron is there already, and lives in perfect retirement, I do not say solitude. He amuses himself I hear, with rowing up and down the lake of Geneva", a few small tears where opened, folds, browned, v.d. (8).
