Georgian Irish actress & socialite.- Theatre Royal, Covent Garden. This present Wednesday, being the 18th of February, will be presented a Comedy call'd The Constant Couple; or a trip to the Jubilee. Sir Harry Wildair by Mrs. Woffington, printed playbill, folds, some fraying to edges, little spotting, lightly browned, 250 x 180mm., no printer, [1756].
⁂ Margaret [Peg] Woffington (1720-1760), was an Irish actress and socialite. It was her 'breeches role' as Sir Harry Wildair in The Constant Couple that 'thrust her into the limelight', as the role had up until then been associated with the great Robert Wilks. In 1749 she became the first female member of a Beefsteak Club founded by the theatre manager and director John Rich, and went on to be its first female President the following year (members included Garrick and Hogarth).
