Lot 297
America.- Marrant (John) A Journal...to which are added, Two Sermons..., first edition, Printed for the Author, 1790; and another related (2)
Hammer Price: £800
Description
America.- Marrant (John) A Journal...to which are added, Two Sermons..., first edition, lacking A4 (list of subscribers) and all after p.106, foxed and with some staining, disbound, [see Sabin 44676 for ?different edition], Printed for the Author, [1790]; and a 19th century Yarmouth imprint about Marrant, disbound, 8vo (2)
⁂ Very rare account of the life of the first black ordained minister in North America. Marrant , was born in New York in 1755. He was taken captive by the Cherokee Indians but was treated well, learned their language and managed to convert a number of them to Christianity.
This copy has early annotations and crossings out on the title-page which suggest that the second sermon (given at Boston) was removed from, or perhaps never included with, this copy at an early stage - the word "Two" has been crossed out and "one" written in its place and similarly the words "at Boston, in New England" have been crossed out. The catchwords at the foot of p.106 ("A Sermon") suggest this is where the second sermon began. Only one copy, and that too with leaves missing from the second sermon, recorded on RBH in 2003. ESTC N505767 records copies at NY Public Library (defective) and Penn State Library.
