Dickens (Charles).- Lacquered papier-mâché snuff box, gift inscription "Tavistock House, Decb. 25/1852, Charles Dickens" in yellow to inside hinged lid, traces of snuff within, lid with scalloped border and central device, oblong box, 45 x 77 x 25mm., 1852; accompanied by a photograph of Dickens leaning on a desk, credited Mason and Co. to verso, v.s. (2 items)
⁂ Evidently a Christmas gift for Dickens. Dickens and his family lived at Tavistock House from 1851-60, during which time he wrote several of his most famous novels, including Bleak House, Hard Times, Little Dorrit, and A Tale of Two Cities.
Provenance: the descendants of W.R. Anderson, music critic and collector of Dickensiana of the early-mid 20th century. The photograph is contained within a folded sheet of paper with typed inscription "Photograph of C.D., given to me by Miss E. Bushell, Hendon, 20 Mar. 1936" and beneath in pencil "Taken in 1866".
