⁂ Ford's most celebrated novel and one of the great novels of the twentieth century, inscribed in the year before his death to his friend, Wanda Tower Pickard. At the time Ford was attempting to get Pickard's novel published, declaring it "the best first novel he'd ever read" though this endeavor was unsuccessful. Inscribed copies of this work are scarce, with only a handful at auction in the last 50 years.
