Leighton (Alexander) An Epitome or Briefe Discoverie, from the Beginning to the Ending, of the many and great Troubles that Dr. Leighton suffered in his Body, Estate, and Family..., first edition, title with typographic border, lacking initial and final blanks, trimmed slightly affecting border at top edge of title and elsewhere at bottom edge with loss to signatures, catchwords and some lines of text, later dark green half morocco, gilt, spine slightly faded, [Wing L1024], 4to, Printed by I.D., 1646.

⁂ Leighton, an extreme puritan propagandist, was one of those of whom the early Stuarts made a martyr, as related here. Having already written two attacks on the prelacy, he was arrested in 1629, tried in the Star Chamber, defrocked, heavily fined, publicly tortured and finally imprisoned, where he remained until released by the Long Parliament in 1640.
