⁂ A preliminary study for Topolski's painting for the series 'Britain's Twentieth-Century Literary Greats', which was commissioned by the Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas, 1961. In 1962, a firework was pushed through the letterbox of Topolski's studio in Waterloo, starting a serious fire. Many artworks were completely destroyed, but the present study was only marginally damaged.
