After a censored and truncated version of the Soviet classic was published in two instalments in Moscow magazine, Bulgakov's greatest and final novel was smuggled out to be printed in full in Paris. Published in June 1967 by YMCA (which had also published Alexander Solzhenitsyn) this first printing made publishing history.
