Hammer Price: £7,500
Description
[Austen (Jane)] Pride and Prejudice: A Novel, 2 vol., third edition, ink ownership inscriptions of 'E K' [Edward Knatchbull] presumably in his hand to pastedowns, lacking half-titles, with final blank to vol. 1, some light spotting, contemporary tree calf, covers with single-rule gilt border, spines gilt with double red morocco labels, vol. 1 neatly rebacked retaining original back-strip, very slight wear to vol. 2 joints, 12mo, [Gilson A5], for T. Egerton, 1817.
⁂ According to Gilson no details are known of the publishing history of this edition. "JA was clearly not consulted (having sold the copyright) and no allusion to this edition has been traced in her surviving letters; it is not apparent whether A5 [this edition] was in fact issued before or after the author's death..." (Gilson pp.41-42).
Provenance: Both volumes bear the ink inscription ‘E K’ [Edward Knatchbull], presumably in his own hand. Part of the set in uniform binding that would seem to have been received by Edward Knatchbull from his mother, Fanny, around his 10th birthday.
Sold as part of lot 20, along with S. & S. and M.P. in the sale of the 'Valuable Library of the late Rt. Hon. Lord Braboune' by Messrs. Puttick & Simpson, 26th June 1893.
