Sive Catalogus Librorum Rarissimorum..., outer margins ruled in red, priced in a contemporary hand throughout, some very faint marginal browning and the very occasional spot or similar, contemporary red morocco, extremities lightly rubbed, [Brunet I 922; de Ricci p.52-3], 8vo, [1775].
⁂ An excellent, comprehensively marked up copy of this important sale catalogue. Askew (1722-1774) was a renowned bibliophile and the auction of his library, conducted by Baker and Leigh, comprised 3572 lots and lasted twenty days. The sale ‘was a great success and was attended by the Paris bookseller De Bure, who bought for the Duc de La Vallière and other French collectors (including the King of France).’ (De Ricci, p.52).
Provenance: Anthony Hobson (1921-2014), book auctioneer, book historian (particularly bindings) and bibliophile (armorial bookplates, and a few pencil marks).
