Insects.- Swammerdam (Jan) Biblia Naturae; sive Historia Insectorum, 2 vol., first edition, titles in Latin and Dutch in red and black with engraved vignette, 53 engraved plates, all but one folding, text in Latin and Dutch, vol. 1 ?lacking 4Z1&2, repairs to a few leaves, occasional light surface soiling, some foxing, some browning and damp-staining, mainly to margins, ex-library copies with bookplate, ink-stamp to Latin titles and all plates, contemporary blind-stamped vellum, small library stickers to foot of spines, spine labels chipped, rubbed and soiled, vol. 1 upper joint split, other joints splitting but holding, [Nissen 4055], folio, Leiden, Isaak Severerinus, 1737-38.

⁂ Jan Swammerdam was a Dutch biologist, who confirmed the theory that bee colonies were led by queen bees. Swammerdam's drawing of the queen bee's reproductive organs are included within the plates of Biblia Naturae.
