Americana.- Kennett (White) Bibliothecæ Americanæ Primordia. An Attempt Towards laying the Foundation of an American Library...Humbly given to the Society for Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, first edition, title with contemporary ownership name of W. Caldwell to head and ink letter to foot, title with short tear into text to fore-edge but no loss, occasional marginal staining, some soiling, foxing and browning to varying degrees, contemporary panelled calf, some wear, [Sabin 37447], small 4to, for J. Churchill, 1713 [but 1714].

"Pinelo excepted [Epitome de la biblioteca oriental i occidental, 1629], this is the first printed catalogue of books relating to America" (Sabin). Bishop White Kennett was perhaps the first of the great collectors of historical Americana, giving his extensive collection to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts in 1712. This work records his library of just over 1,200 books, ephemera and manuscripts, arranged chronologically, the greater part of which has since been lost. A scarce work, with only 250 copies believed to have been printed.
