Gregorius IX, Pope. Decretales epistolae, collation: A-B8 C4, a-z8 A-S8 T4, title with woodcut criblé printer's device, attractive woodcut historiated and decorative initials of various sizes, C4 blank, early ink Latin notes to front free endpaper, early ink marginalia in two hands, foxing (mostly light) and staining, some water-staining at head towards end, lightly browned, contemporary Italian (probably Venetian) blind-stamped and gilt panelled calf, covers with fleuron centre-pieces within interlacing ropework and filet border, sympathetically rebacked, preserving part of original backstrip, lacking ties, 8vo (165 x 110mm; binding 172 x 115mm.), Paris, Claude Chevallon, 1537.
⁂ A rare edition, with USTC recording three copies (Poitiers, Houghton, and Beinecke). These papal edicts remained the basis of cannon law until the early 20th century.
