Playbills.- An album of c.110 playbills, the majority for the Theatre-Royal and other London theatres, and a few for Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham, covering the periods 1757-1798 (c.25), 1800-1820 (c.45) and 1821-1851 (c.40), a few with correction or annotation in a contemporary hand, occasional loss, some browning and staining, all laid down and bound into a 19th century half morocco album, worn, covers detached, folio, c.1757-1851.
⁂ An excellent album of playbills, providing a snapshot of theatrical life and tastes in the capital for a period of some 30 years. The earliest seemingly 'The Winter's Tale (from Shakespear)' performed by David Garrick on 28th January [1757]. Also of note are [Dickens].- The Author's Night...Master Humphrey's Clock, Royal Victoria Theatre, Thursday June 18th, 1840; 'The Mountaineers', Theatre Royal, Hay-Market, Monday 9th June, 1806; 'The Americans', Thetare Royal, Tuesday 30th April, 1811; 'Mother Goose. For the Benefit of Mr. Grimaldi & Mr. Bologna', 14th June 1808; 'Professor Schirmer and Scholl's Aerostatic Balloon Figures and Ergascopic Optical Visions... Large Theatre, Lyceum', [1808] (illustrated with a large woodcut of a balloon horse and rider). The album also includes many 18th and 19th century theatre related clippings.
