Cantemir (Demetrius) The History of the Growth and Decay of the Othman Empire, 2 parts in 1 vol., first English edition, mezzotint portrait frontispiece, 22 engraved plates, one folding map, list of subscribers, occasional faint marginal dust-soiling, occasional marginal pencil note, ex-Leyton public libraries with label and ink-stamps as usual, one or two to plates (not affecting image), faint abrasion mark to front free endpaper where label removed, later calf, rebacked, rubbed, cracked joints but holding firm, bumping to corners and extremities, [Atabey 190; Blackmer 281], folio, for James, John, and Paul Knapton, 1734.
⁂ Atabey says of Cantemir, "His history was considered authoritative, and it was only superseded by von Hammer's monumental history of the Ottoman Empire."
