(pp.139-140) between the two vol., pp.25/26 piece from outer margin, the odd short tear, not affecting text, foxed and water-stained / stained, browned, remains of contemporary wrappers, worn, 8vo, Watertown, N.Y., James Q. Adams, 1825-1824.
⁂ Rare work by Canada's first novelist. The last copy at auction we can trace with a Watertown imprint was in 1957 (there is an Albany imprint of the same year, also rare). The action opens in New York during the yellow fever scourge of the Autumn of 1796, moves to France, and then back to pioneer western New York. It compares and contrasts American democratic institutions with the injustice of European aristocratic regimes.
