Pontanus (Johannes Jovianus) Opera Omnia, edited by Franciscus Asulanus, 3 vol., collation: *4 a-z aa-ss8 : A-Z AA-QQ8 RR6 : aaa-zzz AAA-RRR8, italic type, woodcut printer's device to title of vol.1 and final verso of vol. 3, initial spaces with guide-letters, m8 and F8 blank, lacking blank ss8, vol.1&2 titles neatly mounted on stub, vol.1 m5 small repair to lower margin, vol.2 A4-7 loose, all vol. some spotting or mostly light foxing, [water]-staining, and light browning, 18th century English red panelled morocco, gilt, rebacked in modern wine red morocco in compartments, preserving the original black morocco labels, corners restored, covers with some chipping to original leather and rubbed and scuffed, 8vo (213 x 130mm.), [Venice], [House of Aldus & Andrea Torresani], [June, 1518 & April and September, 1519].

⁂ Bibliotheca Brookeriana set of the first collected Aldine edition. With fol. 64 in vol.2, which according to Renouard is often torn out because of its mocking of bishops, priests and monks. Includes a dedicatory epistle from Gian Francesco Asolano to Altobello Averoldi, legate at Venice to Pope Leo X. Pontanus (1429-1503) was an Italian humanist, diplomat, scholar and poet.

Provenance: Harvard College Library, Charles Minot fund, received 31st October, 1895 (bookplates to front pastedowns); Bibliotheca Brookeriana (bookplates to verso of each title; initialled pencil note at end of vol.1 re. missing blank f.).
