Subscribed by 42 statesmen, Privy Councillors, and senior public figures, including William Pitt and the Archbishop of Canterbury, this broadside signals the beginning of the so-called Bank Restriction period, published just a day after the stoppage of payment of cash for Bank of England notes. Clearly intended to encourage public confidence, it was swiftly followed, on 3rd May, with the enactment of the Bank Restriction Bill. ESTC locates only one copy at the Guildhall Library.
